Fireplace

My Eichler has a fireplace on an outside wall. We never use it. I am considering removing the fireplace and installing a window or a sliding door to see my patio and garden. Has anyone done this? Any structural issues with beams and support? Does a beam run through the fireplace or  is it simply the chimney?
