MDO Eichler Siding - Tips for prep/painting surface?

We are doing some siding replacement and are leaning towards the Thinline MDO product from Eichler Siding. Given the ultrasmooth surface and the desire to have a more authentic Eichler look, we wanted to get some specific tips on painting the MDO product so it looks a little more original.

I have seen very generic recommendations to "use a primer" and "use a nappy roller", however I would be interested in more specific details on this. With that said:

- Can anyone recommend a specific type or brand of PRIMER that works best with MDO since we are trying to create a more wood-like/original Eichler siding texture appearance?

- Any specific recommendations on types or brands of PAINT that work best with MDO?

If we can't get the desired effect with the MDO product then we may just go with the Breckenridge or Douglas Fir panels. Suggestions/feedback would be greatly appreciated.

The siding was originally stained not painted. I don't think you can get that translucent look with paint and of course you can't stain mdf. If you buy the fir siding you can stain it using a semi-transparent stain. Cabot makes many of the original Eichler colors and a local store has the cards with swatches on file that Eichler homes used. If you want the name please e-mail me at leslie at fitchdesign dot com.

Leslie,

Thanks for the advice however we do intend to paint, not stain the siding.

Any specific MDO painting advice would be greatly appreciated!
