Davis Streng Information?

I'm new to the message boards, but am looking for some information on Streng homes located in Davis.

I currently live in Southern California, but am possibly relocating to Davis. As such, I am interested in learning as much as I can about Davis area Streng homes. From the research I've been able to gather online (mostly from the Streng area of this site), the main concentration of Strengs is located in the Covell Park area. I've toured the neighborhood while visiting the city recently, and was able to get inside some of the Strengs that were for sale.

A few questions:

Are any of the original Streng floorplans available online? StrengBrosHomes.com is under construction, but claims it will include floorplans and elevations. Judging from the exterior of the houses, their appear to be about 5-6 different models in that neighborhood. Neither of the realtors that were showing the houses knew if any modifications had been done to the original layout.

Has anybody here remodeled a Davis Streng while keeping the original MCM feel intact? If so, any pictures available? How difficult is it to get an interior remodel approved in Davis? I currently live in Laguna Beach where even the slightest change takes months to get approved.

Thanks in advance to any tips people may have.

For those interested, http://www.strengbroshomes.com is now live with content, and there are some floorplans available. They appear to be for homes built in Sacramento, but two (plan 153 and 154) are similar in layout to some Strengs I've seen in Davis (with the exception of the kitchen and the dining room reversed).

I have no affiliation with the site, but some here may find it useful.

I'm still in search of answers for my Davis area questions, however. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

I haven't seen any other Streng floorplans on line. I bought a Streng in Covell Park last year. It was built in the late 70's and the kitchen and bathrooms were "updated" in the mid 90's and were not done with a mid-century feel. It is going to be a big project for us to update this house.

My husband and I are planning on restoring this house, but have not started it yet. It is my understanding the City of Davis is reasonable to work with, but all work must be permitted.

There is an updated Streng on Kent Dr currently for sale, kitchen update is not 100% modern in feel. There was a Streng that sold last fall on Fordham that had been somewhat updated in a modern fashion. If you would like photos, let me know.

I've seen the listing / pictures for the house on Kent, and as you mentioned, the kitchen remodel did not match the Streng style.

If you have pictures of the Fordham house or any others in the area, it would be much appreciated. I can be reached at:

Hello - I recently purchased a Streng home in Davis (mostly intact, but lots of repairs need to be done since it was built in 1976 and is mostly original!). StrengBrosHomes.com does list most of the basic floor plans (we have model #104) but many Streng homes were modified (extra square footage, minor layout changes, etc) when they were built, so your home may differ slightly even if original. (My house had an enlarged master bedroom that added 51 sq.ft. to the total). In Davis, there are two blocks of Streng homes in West Davis (Cutter and Trawler), and there are many homes in central Davis (between Sycamore and Anderson, and another area closer to E. 8th Street - many are located on streets named after colleges). There is a neighborhood of Streng homes in Woodland (right off Road 98) and of course, many in Sacramento. You will find a few Streng homes scattered in other neighborhoods in Davis that were built by request (rather than as part of a development). I actually stopped by the Streng Brothers office in Davis one day and was able to speak directly with Bill Streng for over half an hour - he answered many of my questions regarding how my home was built and also provided some interesting stories about the architect Carter Sparks and the "old days" when the homes were built. He is a terrific guy, and I was very fortunate that I had the opportunity to meet and speak with him about my home.

If you are relocating to Davis, I hope that you find a wonderful Streng home like we did! Davis is a terrific place to live. :)
