MCM lighting questions

We just recently bought a MCM 1966. The ceiling is all chamfered wood as appears in many Eichler homes . In the detail section of the ceiling/roof on the original drawings, there appears to be no air space between the interior ceiling and the exterior roof to run electrical wiring for surface mounting light fixtures. How does one deal with this? The house desparately needs lighting. Thanks!
