Architecture geeks who don’t read Dan Gregory’s Eye on Design blog at Houseplans.com are doing themselves a disservice. There’s always something interesting there, but a post from Friday featuring plans for modernist farmhouses, caught my eye not just for the smart design but for the pedigree of one of the architects.

Plans for a modest but elegant two-bedroom cottage come from Heidi Richardson, who Gregory explains “is an award-winning Northern California architect who has designed a wide variety of buildings and once worked for William Turnbull, one of the architects of Sea Ranch on California’s Sonoma Coast.”

Those angular yet rustic structures that protrude into the Sonoma fog are a favorite around here. But the plans from Turnbull available at Houseplans are all for Sea Ranch employee housing, not the actual vacation homes.

Meanwhile, Richardson’s two-bedroom farmhouse or rural cottage has a more pleasant design for vacationing, with lots of decks for lounging and a big, open common space for socializing. Now all you need is a patch of Sonoma county to build it on!
